Fourteen Weeks and Counting

I have been bursting (both literally and metaphorically) with ‘good news’ for a while and now it’s finally time to spill the beans. We are expecting a sibling for Ayaan in about six months from now. :)

I waited because I wanted the first trimester to get over before I made a big, public announcement. I also felt it was only fair that I break the news to Ayaan (who’s life will be the most impacted by this) before I leak it to the WWW.

So, I had ‘The Talk’ with Ayaan last weekend and it did not go quite as I had imagined it would in my head… The broad transcript of our chat is replicated below (we actually spoke mostly in Hindi but I have translated it because it's too long for me to do a Hindi version and then an Enhlish translation):

Me: Hey, Ayaan. You remember we went to Veer's house for dinner – you remember, Veer has a baby brother called Raghav?

Ayaan: Yes

Me: And Nayantara has a baby brother, Aditya. And Joshua has a baby sister, Caitlyn

Ayaan: Yes

Me: What about us? Do you think we should get a baby brother/ sister?

Ayaan: Yes, let's!

*twenty second pause in conversation, while I wonder what to say next and Ayaan beats me to it*

Ayaan: Shall we go and get the baby now?

Me: No sweetie. First the baby has to grow in Mama's stomach.

Ayaan: Can't we go get a baby from someone else’s house?

Me: No baby. That would be their baby. Mama has to make our baby in her stomach.

Ayaan: But how will the baby come out of Mama's stomach?

Me: Mama's doctor will take it out.

Ayaan: How will the doctor take it out?

Me: By cutting Mama's stomach.

Ayaan: How will the doctor cut Mama's stomach? With a knife or with scissors?

Me: With a knife...

Ayaan: Then what will the doctor do with the hole in your stomach?

Me: The doctor will stitch it up.

Ayaan: With what?

Me: With a needle and thread.

Ayaan: Can't he use cellotape to stick it?

Me: Er… ok!!! Time to talk about something else...

I got the distinct feeling he was more excited about the cutting business than the baby itself!!! Later conversations over the past week (initiated by him) have only confirmed this suspicion of mine:

Ayaan to Jai: When will the doctor cut Mama's stomach and take out the baby?

Ayaan to Me: (making a chopping motion on my arm) I will cut your arm and then the doctor will have to stitch it back with a needle and thread.

Mentions of the baby, on the other hand, have been scarce.

  20. Glad it's out now...the news that is. The baby we will have to wait for the doctor to bring on the knives. But Ro, how does one explain a natural delivery to kids? Does one explain a natural delivery to kids? *Pondering*

  21. Hey Rohini,
Congratulations!!!! To you and Jai and Ayaan! :)

    This is wonderful news!

  22. Congrats to you, Ayaan and Jai!!

Hope you don't mind me commenting on your previous post here. I wanted to co-relate these two posts.

My daughter's terrible twos really reared its head when I was pregnant with my son. In fact she did not turn two until the baby was born. Though you announced a little later to Aryaan, did you have Morning sickness and such..kids do get the vibe and act like this for attention. Now that he knows, he might be more caring and yes, time to time there will be tantrums that really will get on your nerves. Just wanted you to be cool and have 'This too shall pass' attitude :)

But hey, it is going to be fun with both kids later. It is just a matter of time.

    Enjoy your pregnancy!!

  23. CONGRATULATIONS!! I am sure Ayaan will warm up to the concept soon enough.

    Hugs and Best Wishes, Ro.

  24. Hey! Congratulations! Thats awesome news!
Ayaan sounds like my son who possessed all the glee of the Texas Chainsaw Murderer at the prospect of my C-section. Sadly he hasn't outgrown his orbid fascination, so I have no comfort to offer:-) But YEAH for the new baby!!!

if you're interested, there are some pretty cool books preparing kids for a sibling.

  43. Congratulations!!! Ayaan is hilarious.

  44. Wow! I am overwhelmed and touched by the number of comments with all your congratulations. Thank you so much for your warm wishes..

[Sur] Yeah, I am allowed one glass of wine/ beer a week but that's hardly going to serve out purpose :(

[Kodi's Mom] I am not entirely convinced there's no hint of an evil 'Just you wait' sentiment in that grin of your :P

[M] The mangoes I am craving are of the raw variety. If that is not cliched, I don;t know what is :D

[Parul] Good question. I am still holding out hope for a VBAC but having had Ayaan by c-section, I chose the easier route...

[Manchus/ JLT] You know I have wondered about that. Maybe...

[MGM] Pass on those books names, will ya. I am getting the 'Siblings without rivalry' on a friend's recco

[Manjima] Congratulations! This is the grown-ups 'What to expect'? Because they have a version for preparing kids as well...

[Choxbox] I'd love to hear how you explained the natural birth situation, if you don't mind sharing

    ReplyDelete
  45. Congratulations Rohini. Have a lovely pregnancy.
I suddenly miss mine now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I guess it's actually easier for Ayaan to get his head around the idea of chopping up mama's tum to get the baby out rather than around the actual life-changingness of having a brand new baby in the house. My nine plus year old hid himself in the car and went to sleep on the floor between the back and front seats, and we went mad searching for him all over the neighbourhood when we told him, many many years ago. Kids, I tell you.
Congrats, Rohini. Such wonderful news:)Take care, and cherish every kick and poke......

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Rohini, been a lurker so long. I luv your blog.Sending you & your family loads of good wishes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. congrats Rohini!! Don't worry about Ayaan and enjoy your pregnancy.. You still have few months to change his views about baby.. Once he will feel the baby's kicks he will look forward to play with his brother/sister:-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey Rohini, I meant books for Ayaan:-) I found a few that really helped Arvind wrap his head around what was to come and he was four at the time. He still loves to read them - with his little brother:-)

I'm A Big Brother by Joanna Cole

My New Baby by Annie Kubler

The New Baby (Topsy and Tim) by Jean and Gareth Adamson.

It also helped to not read all of them at once, but to space it out.

    All the best:-)

So he's going to grow up to be a doctor, huh? After all, serial killers don't want docs stitching their victims back together, you know.

Lovely news, Ro. I'm ever so happy for you all.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hey Congrats!!! That's great news! Is Ayaan going to be called Bhaiyya? And does he want a girl or boy...or is he pretty much indifferent at this point of time?

    ReplyDelete
  54. awwwww! congratulations, Im late in wishing you coz I was out of town.
I saw the pic and understood. Wish you a happy pregnancy and the second time mommy feeling. take care.

    ReplyDelete
  55. hahahaha....what a lovely post! My mom says that when she told my elder sis about me being born soon...she had a similar series of out-of-context questions. She was more worried about where this new little guest was planning to put up, because in no way she was going to share her space with anyone ;-)

Btw, congratulations!! I can imagine future posts...balancing the 2 kids, how the elder one reacts to the younger one etc etc...I guess once both your children are 18 you can publish your blog as a book "The complete guide to mothering a child - from crawling age to voting age" :p

    ReplyDelete
  56. AWESOME!!! CONGRATULATIONS!

    ReplyDelete
  57. More comments! Yummy! Thanks for all the good wishes, y'all...

[Dips] This time I really am. Last time it was about the novelty. This time it's about cherishing every moment of my second and last pregnancy :)

[MGM] Thanks for those book names. 'I Am A Big Brother' is also on my shopping list from Amazon. Waiting for the books to get here!

[Sue] Phew! Didn't think of that. Doctor, it is! :D

[Lawyeramma] I am not sure about the Bhaiyya. Kids don't seem to do that any more and even my brother never called me didi... and yesterday I was instructed that it should be a baby brother, so yes, there is a clear preference :)

[Sonia] Double the kids, double the blog fodder :D

  62. well ro here goes:

she asked how the baby was going to come out. so i said there is a special opening in mamma's body for it to come out. she obviously asked where it was. so i said right near the place where we wee from. she pondered over it and asked - how come the baby doesnt fall out right now then? so i said its shut right now, will open when baby is ready to come out. our bodies know, just like it knows other things like when we need to eat, when we need to go to the loo etc.

after two days she came and asked - mamma, does it hurt when the hole becomes big for the baby to come out? i said yes it does but i get a lovely baby at the end of it so its worth it :)

I am SO excited for you!

I think, until they've had a little brother or sister show up, it's a little tricky for the little guys to "get it." It will be easier for him once he sees your belly bulging and gets to feel baby kick a couple of times.

YAY! Babies are so awesome. Hugs!

    ReplyDelete
  77. CONGRATULATIONS Ro !!!

Regarding Ayaan's interest in cutting ... rest assured it will continue even after the baby comes home and will be close to a year .. oh wait ! Thats cantaloupe !

  82. Wow! Nothing like some 'good news' to get some 'good news' and comments going! Thanks for the good wishes :)

[Abha] We have finally moved on from the cutting obsession to a demand for a bay brother!

[Choxbox] Thanks for sharing that. If mine does go the VBAC way, I now have a back-up story to confuse him with :)

[Krish] Well, Krish will figure it out sometime :D

[Parul] Well, that's 87 and counting if you add my comment to it. Let me see if I can summon up some energy for that tag of yours...

[Talena] Thanks and hugs right back at ya.

  105. Hi! Haven't logged in for a while, so did not see this post earlier. A big congrats to you. We are in a similar situation as well (in terms of expecting baby no2 & prepping baby no1).

We actually broke the news to our 3 yr old as soon as we knew about it, and from time to time I have to explain to her about the baby and how it will come out and stuff. We also take her for all our docs visits, so she feels more comfortable and involved with the situation.

One thing I try to get her to do from time to time is to have short talks with the baby so she feels more connected. Even just a good morning or how are you gets us thru some days.

Just thought I would share some things we are doing as it may help you as well. I see Ayaan at the park actually and he's in the same class as some of my friends' kids, so maybe next time I see you in the park, i'll say hi.

Till then Congrats again, and enjoy the (relative) peace till the chaos of two begins :)
